Jailers Save Woman, 32, From Suicide Attempt

The quick thinking of two Smith County jailers saved an inmate's life after the woman attempted to hang herself with a homemade noose Monday, officials said.

Smith County Sheriff's chief deputies Bobby Garmon and Gary Pinkerton praised the actions of the two jailers.

Garmon said jailer Jennifer Kirkpatrick was making her rounds on separation cells about 6 p.m. Monday when she heard gurgling and gasping noises coming from cell 212.

"She opened the cell and found Cayenne Reasonover with a noose made from her bed sheet wrapped around her neck and the woman hanging," he said.

Garmon said Ms. Kirkpatrick yelled for assistance and Cpl. John McCambridge arrived to help lift the woman up, taking the pressure off the woman's neck allowing her to breathe.

Garmon and Pinkerton said the 32-year-old Bullard woman was taken to a local hospital where she was being treated for injuries suffered in the incident.

Jail records show Ms. Reasonover has been jailed since November on a parole violation and drug charges.

Garmon said the woman had been on suicide watch and was being checked between 15 and 30 minutes to ensure her safety.

"The hospital said these two people saved her life by responding so quickly," he said.

Pinkerton said he was happy with his staff.

"This is an example of them being on their toes and saving a woman's life. It's good to have people like this who are properly trained and who know what to do," he said.
