Rusk County Poetry Contest Taking Entries
The Rusk County Poetry Society celebrates April as National Poetry Month with its annual East Texas Poetry in Schools competition.
The competition is open to East Texas students in first through 12th grades who are currently enrolled in public, private or home-school education.
First- through 12th-graders are invited to enter through their school. Deadline for submission is March 9.
Rusk County Poetry Society members will judge the entries according to grade level. Criteria for poem selection include creativity, poetic expression, originality and interesting ideas.

Past submissions have covered a variety of topics such as nature, family, friends, conflict, loss, spirituality and introspection.
Awards will be presented at 1 p.m. April 12, with readings by the first-, second- and third- place winners. The ceremony will be in the South Main Church of Christ auditorium in Henderson.

The winner of the Mary Craig Memorial College Scholarship, named in honor of the founder of the event, will be announced as well. This award is given to the 12th-grade first place winner.
A printed collection of the winning student poems will be available for purchase after the awards ceremony, with each entering school receiving a free copy for its campus library.
