Red Cross Promotion Aids Victims Of Disaster
Meet Piper the Puppy. Brown, white and cuddly, he’s undeniably cute. This stuffed pooch has an important job: to comfort children going through upheaval and trauma.

Beneath the button nose and huggable grin beats the heart of a native East Texan.

Piper is a creation of Phebe Phillips who grew up in Gilmer and designs stuffed animals often described as haute couture plush. After graduating from Southern Methodist University and a stint as a broadcast reporter, Phillips turned her creative energy to making high-quality animals full of personality.

Based in Dallas, Phillips’ whimsical menagerie of friendly critters — cats, rabbits, bears, dogs, frogs, mice, pigs and elephants — have been sold in Neiman Marcus stores and other retailers for 25 years.

She made Piper to raise money for the American Red Cross and give young children something to love and cling to when their own treasured animals are lost in fires or natural disasters.

“House fires, floods, tornadoes and other disasters are scary for kids, but you can ease their fears by sponsoring a “Piper the Puppy” for $100 today,” reads a Red Cross national promotion.

The donation buys more than a stuffed animal. It provides the help people need at one of the worst times of their lives.

“While the child is being comforted by Piper the Puppy, you can take comfort in knowing that your $100 gift truly turns compassion into action,” says the Red Cross message. “Your gift provides shelter, three meals, a cot, two blankets and basic hygiene items to someone who loses everything when their homes are destroyed by a disaster.”

Money from the Piper promotion goes to individual Red Cross chapters.

Tammy Prater, director of Smith County ARC, says the chapter has Pipers ready to be “adopted.” Those who want to make a donation can send the donation to the Smith County Chapter with a designation for Piper. Information on how to donate is on the website smithcountyredcross.org.
