Youth's First Buck Becomes Leader
Proving once again it doesn't take a big ranch to produce a good buck, Tyler's Lawson Barrett shot to the lead in the North Texas Youth Division of the Tyler Morning Telegraph's 32nd Big Buck Contest with a 14-point Anderson County buck scoring 123 gross.
The 14-year-old was hunting with his father, Phil, during last weekend's youth-only season on a 150-acre farm owned by Clay and Tina Chambless of Flint.

Using a .30-30, Barrett started the morning of his first hunting taking his first deer, a doe. He went back to the same stand that afternoon and took his first buck with an 80-yard shot. Barrett got his shot courtesy of young love. The buck sprinted across an open field and stopped for only seconds to check out a doe at a feeder in front of the stand.
The buck had an inside spread of 14 1/8 inches and a longest main beam length of 16 1/8 inches. The longest tine measured 7 1/8 inches and the largest circumference at the bass was 5 4/8 inches. The deer had 15 6/8 inches in abnormal points.

Brownsboro's Clay Lemmert continues to lead the North Texas Adult Division of the contest with a 4-year-old, 11-point Henderson County buck scoring 140. All other positions in the contest are open.
Hunters may still register for the contest. Participation is free, but hunters must register at least 24 hours in advance of taking their deer. First-place winners in each adult division will receive a Remington .270-caliber rifle and a shoulder mount of their deer. Second-place winners are awarded gift certificates.
