Eustace ISD Educator Named Superintendent Of The Year
Eustace ISD Superintendent Dr. Coy Holcombe was named the 2011 Region 7 Superintendent of the Year.
Region 7 encompasses 106 school districts in a 17-county area.
Holcombe has more than 25 years of education experience and 17 years of administrative experience, according to a statement from Region 7.
He has worked in Eustace, Evant, Mart, and Groesbeck ISDs, according to the statement. Eustace is located less than 15 miles northwest of Athens.
Holcombe came to Eustace ISD as superintendent in 2001 and has led the district in improving instruction and fiscal management, according to the statement.
In 2010, Eustace ISD earned an Exemplary rating — the first time for the district — along with having three Exemplary campuses.
Under Holcombe's guidance, the district completed a $13 million bond package that brought additional classrooms to each campus, a new competition gym and an athletic field house.
This was the first major renovation to the high school since it was built in 1984, the statement reads.
Board members praised him for his efficiency and strong leadership, according to the statement.
They said he constantly looks for ways to improve the district's educational system. He has sought out grants to purchase technology for teachers and the classroom.
“His overall attention to detail, deeply dedicated personality, and continually caring attitude have time and time again aided the board in making timely, correct, and focused decisions that have directly and positively impacted the total school district operations,” one board member said, according to the statement.
Holcombe received his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University, masters of education administration from Tarleton State University and doctorate of education from Baylor University.
He is married with two daughters. He is a member and on the finance committee for the First Baptist Church of Eustace and a volunteer coach for the Tri-County Soccer League and the Eustace All-Sports Association.
Each year superintendent candidates are chosen for strong leadership skills, dedication to improving their school districts, and commitment to public involvement in education, among other qualities, the statement reads.
School boards nominate candidates, but those same school board members cannot be on the panel of judges.
A panel of judges consisting of regional school board members and Texas Association of School Board representatives select the winner based on their responses to a series of essay questions, according to the statement.
Each regional winner's application will be sent to the 2011 Texas Association of School Administrators and Texas Association of School Boards annual convention in October where the state winner will be announced.
