A longtime Van Zandt County constable is recovering from being trampled by a stallion earlier this week.
Van Zandt County Sheriff Pat Burnett said Thursday that Precinct 2 Constable C.B. Wiley had undergone multiple surgeries to his arm, wrists and legs after the incident at his home Tuesday.
Burnett said Wiley had talked to him early Tuesday about a new horse he had acquired.
"He asked me to come over and ride a new stallion he was trying to break, and I said 'no way.' We laughed and he went on his way," he said.
Several hours later, Burnett said he learned of Wiley's accident.
"The way I understand it, he was leading the horse on a rope when it reared up and came down on him several times. That horse got on him pretty good," he said.
Burnett said the constable was flown to Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler where he still is undergoing treatment.
"He is supposed to be hospitalized until at least next Tuesday, and then he is facing four weeks of rehab before he is back at it again," he said.
Attempts to reach Wiley in the hospital were unsuccessful Thursday.
"I'm glad he's going to be OK, because C.B. is a pretty good guy," Burnett said.
