Two More TISD Schools Join AVID
A college-readiness program designed to increase the number of students going to college will come to two more Tyler ISD elementary schools.

Jones MST Elementary Academy and Ramey Elementary School are implementing the AVID program.

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a college-readiness program designed to serve primarily students in the academic middle, according to a webpage about the program.

At the elementary level, the program combines quality teaching practices with a framework that encourages writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to learn. It targets students in the fourth and fifth grades, according to the program's webpage.

AVID already is in progress at nine other TISD schools, according to a statement from the school district. One of these, Peete Elementary, was the district's first elementary school to use the program, and success there led the district to expand it, according to the TISD statement.
