Quitman's McNeal Stamps Victory Over Bullard
BULLARD -- Two long, fourth quarter touchdown runs by Quitman's Devontae McNeal put a damper on Bullard's plans for an opening night win, as the Bulldogs took a 29-27 victory over the Panthers on Friday night.
Bullard kept the game close with one goal-line stand, and then took the ball the length of the field to take a 20-16 lead as Joe Ganaway scored from 26 yards out.
McNeal, however, answered back with two TD sprints within 28 seconds to put the game away. Down 29-20 after the scores, Bullard did not go down without a fight as D.J. Diduch bulled over from 8 yards out to narrow the gap to two points.
Hunter Skelton played a great game for Bullard with eight catches for 103 yards. He also made a tackle on fourth-and-goal to thwart a Bulldogs scoring effort.
McNeal finished the game with 233 yards on 21 carries to lead Quitman (1-0).
Bullard was paced by quarterback Kirk Bryant with 61 yards on 15 carries. He added 205 yards through the air, hitting on 16-of-28 and one touchdown.
Bullard scored first as Bryant hit Skelton for a 41-yard scoring strike to get the scoring started before Quitman began its comeback.
The Panthers defense recovered a fumble by Colton Mebane to halt another Quitman scoring threat.
Quitman plays at T.K. Gorman next Friday with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
The Panthers (0-1) will look for their first win on the road next week in Mineola.
