DAINGERFIELD -- What Daingerfield wanted was a strong performance to begin defense of another title. What the Tigers got was a dominant one.
In a matchup of ranked teams, the two-time defending state champs were clearly better. Bigger, stronger and faster, Daingerfield opened a 30-point halftime lead and overpowered Arp, 44-14, in the season opener Friday night at Tiger Stadium.
It was a matchup between Class 2A powers that East Texas fans started buzzing about once schedules were finalized last spring. Yet perhaps it came a season too late for fifth-ranked Arp (0-1), which lost considerable talent after reaching three straight state quarterfinals and No. 1 in the AP poll.
The undisputed No. 1 these days is no doubt Daingerfield (1-0), which is trying to become the first East Texas program since Big Sandy's dynasty of the 1970s to win three consecutive state titles.
"We knew we were capable of playing well," said Daingerfield senior running back La'Marce Lafayette, who rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns in his first varsity start.
Early in the first quarter, though, it was Arp that grabbed the momentum when junior quarterback Kyle Copeland faked a handoff and took the ball 52 yards to make the score 6-0 with 9:30 remaining.
From that point forward, however, Daingerfield harassed the visiting offense and overmatched the visiting defense to the tune of a 257-87 advantage in total yards before halftime.
Daingerfield, whose defensive line averages 273 pounds and linebacker corps is led by Texas Longhorns pledge Steve Edmond, disrupted Arp's offense throughout. Although it allowed more than 200 total yards, most of that came on Copeland's touchdown and late in the game.
On offense, meanwhile, Daingerfield received a dazzling debut from Lafayette and another solid performance from quarterback Tyler Boyd, who passed for 170 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 94 yards and another pair of scores.
After punting on the opening drive, Daingerfield scored on its next seven possessions of the first half and used a short field on four occasions. Lafayette's 25-yard run with 5:39 showing in the opening quarter put Daingerfield on the board for the first time to tie the score at 6-6.
