T.K. Gorman scored all of 35 points in 2009 and hadn't won since beating Grace Community in 2008.
Trailing by eight in the third quarter, the Crusaders showed they were tired of all the losing.
Seniors Kyle Buzbee, Jacob Becker and Christian Tucker supplied game-changing plays on offense and defense as Gorman rallied for a 22-16 victory over Winona on Friday at McCallum Stadium.
The game was the middle of three in the Azalea Orthopedics and Texas Spine and Joint Hospital Tyler Football Classic. All Saints takes on Carrollton Christian Academy at 7 p.m. tonight.
Buzbee recovered two fumbles and caught an interception and a touchdown; Becker ran for a team-high 85 yards and a touchdown; and Tucker's interception led to Gorman's (1-0) go-ahead score in the third quarter.
Winona (0-1) broke a scoreless deadlock when Josh Timmons escaped for a 45-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter.
That's when Becker, who had minus-9 yards on two carries to that point, set up Gorman's first score with 39- and 9-yard runs. Kevin Johnson ran a QB sneak into the end zone.
After a holding penalty negated a successful conversion, Buzbee received a pitch and tossed to a wide open Connor Anderson to knot up the score at 8 with 5:20 to play in the third.
On the ensuing drive, Tucker grabbed a wounded-duck pass from Winona quarterback Chase Ramirez and returned it 13 yards to the Winona 32. Becker stepped up with a 25-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion run for a 16-8 lead with 1:33 left in the third.
The Crusaders increased their lead to 22-6 after Buzbee intercepted Ramirez. Becker ran for 21 yards and Johnson found Buzbee for a 20-yard strike three minutes into the fourth quarter.
After a roughing the kicker penalty kept the drive alive, Winona marched down and pulled within six when Timmons ran in from a yard out and Ramirez ran in the conversion with 2:05 to play.
However, with no timeouts left, a failed onside kick doomed the Wildcats' chances as the Crusaders ran out the clock.
Timmons led all rushers with 129 yards on 15 carries.
The game was scoreless in the first half, though Winona threatened in the second quarter with a first-and-goal at the 4. Three penalties pushed Winona back to as far as the 22 before a fumble recovered by Buzbee ended the drive.
The Wildcats incurred 14 penalties for 140 yards and committed four turnovers. The Crusaders had 70 penalty yards but held onto the ball all night. That difference allowed for Gorman to win despite being outgained 289-182.
Notes:
Members of the Gorman 1984 and 1995 championship teams were honored at halftime. … Winona sophomore Brian Lacey Jr., who ran for 93 yards, was competing against his father, Brian Lacey, who coaches the defensive and offensive lines at Gorman.
