HS FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: West Rusk Pounds Redwater
GILMER -- West Rusk ran over, around and through Redwater on Thursday in a 52-36 win at Buckeye Stadium in a high school football season opener.
Santos Gonzales, DeWayne Fisher and Chris Johnson combined for 412 yards rushing and six touchdowns.
Gonzales led the Raiders (1-0) with 10 carries for 201 and two scores while Fisher had 14 for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson passed for 141 yards and rushed for 83, accounting for three touchdowns.
Elysian Fields 27, Harmony 8
HALLSVILLE -- Stanley Roquemore rushed for 190 yards and two touchdowns to lead Elysian Fields to a 27-8 victory over Harmony at Bobcat Stadium in the 2010 season football opener for both teams. Roquemore needed just 19 carries for his total, which included 98 yards in the second half.
The loss spoiled the beginning of Tim Russell's second tenure as Harmony's head coach. Russell coached at Harmony from 2001 to 2003 before taking a similar position at Pine Tree, which he held from 2004 to 2008.
Eric Whittemore led Harmony with 70 yards rushing. Elysian Fields had a slight edge in total yards (292-261) but Harmony was hampered by four turnovers while Yellow Jackets had two. Harmony's Juan Montoya had two tackles for losses.
Trailing 13-0 at halftime, Harmony attempted a comeback in the third quarter. The Eagles opened the quarter with a 64-yard drive, capped by a one-yard touchdown run by Whittemore. On the next Elysian Fields drive, Harmony defensive lineman Andrew Conway recovered a fumbled snap which gave the Eagles the ball at their own 20-yard line with 4:08 left in the quarter.
On Harmony's ensuing drive however, the Eagles went for a first down on a fourth-and-one at their own 29-yard line. Harmony quarterback Wesley Schoon attempted to sneak for the first down, but Elysian Fields defensive end Isaiah Golden led a surge which stopped Schoon for no gain. Elysian Fields capitalized with a 13-yard touchdown run by Roquemore, giving EF a 20-8 lead with 2:05 left in the third quarter.
Harmony running back Luke Laminack did not play because of a sprained knee ligament and is questionable for next Friday, when Harmony hosts Ore City. Elysian Fields hosts New Diana next Friday.
Shelbyville 34, Troup 27
BULLARD -- Troup and Shelbyville opened up the inaugural Austin Bank-DeHaven Eye Clinic Brook Hill Football Classic on Thursday night in fine fashion at Brook Hill's Herrington Stadium.
Troup overcame some early miscues but battled back only to fall short 34-27 to Shelbyville.
The debut of Tigers head coach Chuck Griffin was a not a memorial start for the Tigers as the Dragons held a 14-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
The Dragons led by as many as 13 in the second half before Troup cut the lead to 7 with eight minutes left, but an incompletion on fourth and goal killed the Tigers rally.
Former Brook Hill player Julius Johnson, back on his old home field, ran for two second-half touchdowns for Troup as the Tigers tried to overcome their slow start. His first touchdown run came from 56 yards out.
In the end, Brad Estes' 32-yard touchdown pass to Nino Cartwright with 8:58 to play proved to be the difference for Shelbyville. Estes was 11 of 20 for 237 yards and three touchdowns.
Johnson led all ballcarriers with 152 yards on 10 carries.
Shelbyville's Jestin Brown had a 40-yard interception return for a TD in the first quarter.
