Man Confronts 3 Off-duty Tyler Police Officers

Three Tyler police officers out for a jog early this morning got a surprise when a knife wielding man approached them and picked a fight.

Sgt. Jeff Callaway said the officers were running shortly after midnight in the 200 block of East Ferguson when a man presumably mistook the three off-duty officers for subjects with whom he had an earlier confrontation, and approached them to continue it.

“The officers were jogging when the subject approached them on foot yelling at them about how they had started a fight with the wrong individual, and began to curse them and approach them aggressively, wanting a physical confrontation,” Callaway said.

The sergeant said the officers identified themselves as police officers, produced badges and attempted to stop the man from assaulting them.

“At this point, the subject produced an open pocket knife and informed the officers that he did not care if they were officers and advanced on them with the open knife,” he said.

However, the man did not get too close to the officers as they reacted to the situation.

“Officers responded by producing a firearm, at which time the subject dropped the knife, surrendered and was arrested,” Callaway said.

The officers then placed the 22-year-old Chip O’Neal Osario under arrest for three counts of aggravated assault on a public servant.
