‘ArtWorks’ Series Kicks Off In Tyler This Month
This month, aspiring artists can take part in a free “ArtWorks” Instructional Series at the Gallery Main Street in downtown Tyler.

The program will feature instruction in a variety of genres taught by local artists. The workshops are free, but students should RSVP to reserve a space, and anyone younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

“The Art of Clay” will kick off the series on June 19 with a session taught by Joan Iverson, whose work has been shown and recognized throughout the region, city officials said in a prepared statement. The event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the gallery, 110 W. Erwin St., and will include a lecture and demonstration. To participate hands-on while Ms. Iverson demonstrates her craft, students can pay $10, which will cover the cost of clay, firing and the use of tools and the artists can pick up their work at the gallery two weeks after the workshop.

From 1 to 4 p.m. on June 26, Dolph Miller and John Johansson will teach “Photographing your Art” at the gallery. The session will focus on how to properly set up, light and capture quality digital photographs of two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork.

“Quality digital images of artwork are crucial to artists who must submit digital images of their artwork for participation in juried exhibits,” Tyler Main Street Director Beverly Abell said. “We have numerous inquiries about technique and how to best adhere to prospectus requirements when photographing artwork for a jury process.”

Students should bring their own digital cameras and are encouraged to bring tripods.

The series, which will continue in July, are an expansion of Gallery Main Street’s mission.

“All along we envisioned Gallery Main Street as more than just a static display of art,” she said. “We want this gallery to be a place of learning and creativity as well …”
