Artwork from area college students goes on display this week as The University of Texas at Tyler and Tyler Junior College open exhibits.
Artwork created by students at UT Tyler will be exhibited and sold during a summer-long exhibition.

The 2010 Juried Student Exhibition at the university's Meadows Gallery began Monday and will run through Aug. 11, according to a statement from UT Tyler.
The annual event features work from undergraduate and graduate art students with each student submitting as many as three two- or three-dimensional pieces, the statement reads.

Art faculty will judge the work and present awards and scholarships to some students. Most pieces will be available for sale.
A public opening reception will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Meadows Gallery, located in the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center.
The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays or by special appointment.

At Tyler Junior College, the artwork of three students will be on display today through May 6 in the Wise Auditorium Art Gallery.
This exhibit includes sculpture, painting and mixed media, according to a statement from TJC.

The work is the creation of TJC sophomores Trudy Atteberry, of Hawkins; Megan Bryant, of Lindale; and Adam Douglas, of Tyler. All three students received a 2009-10 performance grant.

Art professor and gallery director Derrick White said the grants are awarded each spring to three or four outstanding art students. Students receive $850 to $1,000 to help pay for their tuition.

In return, they must produce artwork for two exhibits — one in the fall and one in the spring, White said.

The students work together to select the artwork and install and promote the exhibit.

“It just gives them some professional experience,” White said.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. An artists’ reception will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
