All Saints Coach Reprimanded For Killing Armadillo During Practice

An All Saints Episcopal School coach has been reprimanded after school officials learned he killed an armadillo during a sports practice.

Headmaster Art Burke told the Tyler Morning Telegraph on Tuesday that the animal wandered onto the field during an after-school practice.

The coach "disposed of" the animal on his own and out of sight of the students, Burke said.

He declined to say which sport or name the coach.

A parent informed the school of the incident about three weeks ago, a few days after it happened. And school officials talked to the coach in question.

Burke said the school disapproves of the coach's decision and officially reprimanded him for it.

"We should not be destroying armadillos on our property," he said. "It won't happen again."

The coach reportedly thought the armadillo was a predator on the field and that the animal was not only invading the space, but also damaging the grass and the turf, Burke said.

"The coach said that he's done this before with armadillos," Burke said. "No one here knew about it. Now that we know, we are not going to let it happen again."

He said school officials will contact animal control if this happens again.
