ArtWalk Takes Over Downtown Thursday Night
By CASEY MURPHY
Staff Writer

Whether it's dancers, paintings, sculptures or short films you're interested in, the second ArtWalk in downtown Tyler will have something for you Thursday evening.

Tyler's Main Street Program and the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition (DTAC), an all-volunteer group of artists, are hosting the event from 4 to 8 p.m. throughout the downtown area.

Businesses and buildings will host artists and their work, which was selected for the exhibit by a DTAC committee. Everything from large-scale metal sculpture to traditional watercolor will be displayed. Two artists will demonstrate a pottery-throwing technique on the T.B. Butler Fountain Plaza, and the youth dance group Fly Kids will perform throughout the evening.

A new feature of the ArtWalk will be a showing of short films in the Ron Mabry Conference Room of the Gallery Main Street, 110 W. Erwin St. Former winners of the local No Name Film Fest will be shown by members of the DTAC's filmmakers group.

"This is only our second ArtWalk, but we have already grown a great degree," Tyler Main Street Director Beverly Abell said in a prepared statement. "Not only do we have the same high level of art on display, but we now have all of these interactive and performing arts on exhibit for the enjoyment of the public."

The first ArtWalk, held Dec. 4, saw about 500 people come to downtown for the event, Ms. Abell said during a Feb. 18 Heart of Tyler board meeting.

Ms. Abell recommends that you first stop at the Gallery Main Street on Thursday to pick up a map showing where all the artists and venues will be located. The ArtWalk is free to attend, and art will be for sale.

"The premise of the ArtWalk is simple," Ms. Abell said earlier. "Basically, downtown businesses open their spaces to artists to display their work for one night and, together, they invite the public to view the art and visit the businesses."
