Cayuga Wins 1A Division I Basketball State Championship
From Staff Reports

AUSTIN — A shot at history became reality Saturday morning for Cayuga. It didn't happen easily, though.

The top-ranked Wildcats overcame one of their worst shooting performances of the season to beat Bronte, 66-60, in overtime for the Class 1A Division I state basketball title at the Frank Erwin Center.

Cayuga (22-2) won its first state basketball title in more than a half-century, and became the first school since Everman in 2002-03 to win football and basketball championships in the same school year.

Down 57-51 with 1:55 left in regulation, Cayuga's Preston Anderson hit two 3-pointers to tie the game at 57 with 1:02 remaining. C.J. Wagner missed a jumper with one second remaining to send the game into overtime.

The Wildcats took a 62-60 lead with 2:16 left in overtime on another 3-pointer by Anderson. Cayuga scored its final four points from the free throw line and held Bronte without a point for the final 2:25 of the game.

Cayuga's Traylon Shead, bound for The University of Texas to play football, put his mark on his final basketball game. The senior scored 15 points and dominated the boards with 17 rebounds — 12 on the offensive end. Billy Duncan scored 17 points, with all of his field goals coming from behind the arc, and Anderson finished with 15 points.

The Wildcats, who scored 100-plus points in 10 straight games in the regular season, shot just 30.4 percent from the field and 25 percent from the 3-point line.
Offensive rebounds were the key to Cayuga's victory. The Wildcats, who made 30 offensive rebounds to Bronte's 10, scored 21 second-chance points.
