Texas Independence Day Celebration Set Tuesday

The Charles G. Davenport Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Piney Woods Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas will co-sponsor a ceremony Tuesday on downtown Tyler's Fountain Square to commemorate the 174th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

The event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
According to a written statement, the area will be decorated with historic Texas and United States flags, owned and cared for by the Piney Woods Chapter SRT.
The display will include the Six Flags Over Texas and reproductions of some historic battle flags of the Texas Revolution, including the "Come and Take It" banner from Gonzales, the "New Orleans Greys" banner captured by General Santa Anna at the Alamo and the Sherman flag of San Jacinto that now is on display at the state capitol.
DRT members will be in period dress, and the public is encouraged to wear Texas-themed attire, according to a news release.
Festivities will kick off with traditional country music by Texas artists, such as The Lawmen Country Music Band out of Austin, comprising former officers of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
According to a news release, selections will include "Good Hearted Woman," "Me and Bobby McGee," "Waltz Across Texas" and "The Yellow Rose of Texas."
At 11:50 a.m., a formal ceremony will start, with pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags and the singing of "Texas, Our Texas."
Texas Independence Day proclamations and resolutions also will be presented by Mayor Barbara Bass and Smith County Commissioner Jeff Warr.
At 12:10 p.m., after the formal ceremony, the public is invited to celebrate the 174th anniversary of Texas Independence Day with a Texas birthday cake.
If there is inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the West Erwin Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 420 W. Erwin St.
