Tyler Council Approves Contract To Sell City-Owned Timber

Tyler City Council this morning awarded a contract to sell city-owned timber to Bayou State Timber Services Inc.

In October, the Tyler Solid Waste Department requested that the Texas Forest Service create a five-year Forest Stewardship Management Plan for city-owned property at the Greenwood Farms Landfill, as well as city-owned property located to the east of the landfill, in the Jackson Heights Community. The city hired American Forest Management, Inc. to implement the plan and oversee the cutting and marketing of the timber of about 292 acres next to the landfill.

Today’s action will allow the city to sell the timber cut from the area to Bayou State Timber Services, Inc., which was the highest of three bidders.

The city owns 640 acres on Farm-to-Market Road 2767, with 400 acres permitted as a sanitary landfill operated by Allied Waste/Republic Services. About 100 acres are used as a landfill and the remaining acreage will not be needed for several decades, according to city officials.

In the past, a 173-acre tract has undergone several high-grade cutting operations and the Texas Forest Service recommends a final harvest be done on the area now to convert it to a productive pine plantation later.

About 15-20 acres will be cleared and not replanted for the storage of landfill dirt and 65 acres along Texas Highway 31 will be left as a buffer zone. All property not usable for the landfill in the next 30 years will be converted to a productive pine plantation.

Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass said with the forest management plan, the city is planning now to ensure a high level of services in the future.

“The Greenwood Farms Landfill is expected to be able to provide the city with landfill services for more than 100 years,” she said.
