Chappelle Tops All-Area TAPPS
By TRAVIS YOESTING
Staff Writer

Player of the Year: Jeremey Chappelle, Bullard Brook Hill, senior.

Chappelle did it all for the state runner-up Guard. As a receiver he caught 56 passes for 1,444 yards and 16 touchdowns but gave so much more to the offense. Additionally, his deep-play threat played a role in Brook Hill's 3,073 rushing yards. On defense, Chappelle had four interceptions -- one that he returned for a touchdown -- and recorded 55 tackles, 1.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries. Chappelle was also an efficient return man (at least when teams weren't kicking away from him) and was named first-team all-state on both offense and defense.

Offensive Player of the Year: Tyler Baker, Brook Hill, junior.

Despite missing a few games with a tweaked hamstring, Baker threw for 2,023 yards with 22 touchdowns and ran for 1,088 yards and 19 scores on his way to second-team all-state recognition. Baker was at his best in the playoffs when he had 593 passing yards, 765 rushing yards and 16 total TDs in four games.

Defensive Player of the Year: Cameron Broderhausen, Grace Community, junior.

Forget the fact that the Cougars allowed 26.6 points per game, Broderhausen's numbers speak for themselves. The junior linebacker recorded 10.1 tackles a game (4.1 solo) and had eight sacks, six QB hurries, four pass knock downs and an interception.

Newcomer of the Year: Kevin Johnson, T.K. Gorman, sophomore.

There's no doubt the Crusaders struggled to find the end zone in 2009, but Kevin Johnson proved to be a bright spot for Gorman. After starting the year under center for the JV squad, Johnson was jumped up to the varsity level and showed he's a player the program can build around for the next two years.

Offense

Offensive Linemen: Heath Dickey, Brook Hill, senior:

The leader of the Guard's highly effective offense, Dickey stood tall at the forefront on the line. Behind Dickey, the Guard rushed for 3,073 yards and threw for 2,799. He was named to the all-state first team.

Micah Clark, Grace, junior:

Clark was the top player on an undersized and underrated offensive line. Clark and his fellow linemen paved the way for 1,796 rushing yards and 3,080 more through the air.

Harrison Jenkins, All Saints, senior:

One of the Trojans' captains, the 6-2, 215-pound Jenkins was a rock on the All Saints O-line.

Sam Scarborough, T.K. Gorman, senior:

At 6-3, 180-pounds, Scarborough more than held his own for the Crusaders, earning all-district honorable mention in an otherwise down year for the Gorman offense.

Justin Northcutt, Brook Hill, senior:

Another cog in the Guard's potent offense, Northcutt was named first-team all-district and honorable mention all-state.

Quarterbacks

Grant Ingram and Taylor Stanley, Grace, senior and junior, respectively:

It's hard to separate the two Cougar signal callers. The pair swapped out every drive as Grace put up colossal numbers on offense. Ingram, a gritty southpaw, brought a running element with 371 yards while Stanley, who typically stayed in the pocket, threw for more yards (1,950). Both combined to complete 60 percent of their passes.

Running Backs

Cameron Broderhausen, Grace, junior: Broderhausen's 441 yards and six scores on the ground may not be eye-popping, but the Cougar back was highly effective in the passing game too. Hauling in mostly screen passes, Broderhausen made his QBs look good with 18 catches for 453 yards, more than 25 yards a catch to go with five TDs.

Hale Buckley, All Saints, sophomore: When Buckley was on, the Trojans were on. In All Saints' two wins Buckley rushed for 119 on 12 carries and 86 yards on nine carries, scoring in each contest.

Receivers/Tight Ends

Craig Schambach, Grace, junior: The Cougars had a lot of weapons at receiver, but Schambach stood above the rest. His 58 receptions for 744 yards accounted for about a quarter of Grace's production through the air.

JB Moss, Brook Hill, sophomore: While it's hard to nail down a position for Moss (he played quarterback at times and had more rushing attempts than receptions), the Guard sophomore was electric. But whether running (958 yards, 13.1 yards a carry, 17 TDs), receiving (32 for 651 yards, seven TDs) or throwing (61 percent completion rate, 586 yards, three TDs), Moss was usually finding the back of the end zone.

Ruben Delong, All Saints, freshman: Named the district Newcomer of the Year, Delong became a top target for the Trojans, averaging about four catches a game.

Kicker

JB Moss, Brook Hill, sophomore: Did I mention Moss can kick the ball too? The do-it-all sophomore connected on 58 of 65 PATs and nailed three field goals. In all, Moss scored 211 points. Oh, and he punted 16 times for a 40.1-yard average.

Utility

Bradley White, Grace, junior: White was too good at both running the ball (8.6 yards a carry, five TDs) and catching the ball (39 for 575 and seven scores) to not be on the list somewhere on offense.

Defense

Defensive Linemen

Matthew Ruark, Brook Hill, junior: A second-team all-state lineman, Ruark recorded team highs in sacks (8.5) and tackles for loss (13.5).

Heath Dickey, Brook Hill, senior: A two-way starter, Dickey was named second-team all-state for his work on defense. Though his numbers weren't huge (25.5 tackles, two sacks), his play was, allowing those around him to wreak havoc in the backfield.

Richie Price, Grace, junior: Price was Grace's leading tackler on the defensive line. He sacked the quarterback three times and hurried the opposing signal caller three more.

Sam Scarborough, T.K. Gorman, senior: Scarborough complemented his all-district honorable mention status on offensive line with the same recognition on the defensive line.

Linebackers

Bradley White, Grace, junior: The 6-0, 170-pound White led Grace in tackles with 104 in the regular season. He also recorded: one fumble recover, three forced fumbles, five QB hurries, one sack, one interception, three knocked down passes and one blocked kick.

Micah Clark, Grace, junior: The third of four junior linebackers that recorded at least 69 tackles for the Cougars. Clark finished with 93 take downs and forced a team-high four fumbles.

Jay Hardin, All Saints, senior: Hardin led the Trojans in tackles and brought leadership, aggressiveness and intensity to the All Saints defense that couldn't be measured in statistics. Hardin and Harrison Jenkins became the first two Trojans to letter in football four years.

Jared Dickey, Brook Hill, sophomore: A first-team all-state linebacker, Dickey wracked up seven sacks and 65.5 tackles (13 for loss). He also forced and recovered a fumble.

Defensive Backs

Grant Childress, Grace, sophomore: Childress grabbed six interceptions for the Cougars. He also batted down three passes and recorded 84 tackles, fourth-best on the team.

Jack Ryder, T.K. Gorman, senior: Ryder was effective catching balls on offense as a receiver, but showed he could do the same on defense. Against rival Grace he nabbed two interceptions en route to being named all-district honorable mention on defense.

JB Moss, Brook Hill, sophomore: Grabbing his third spot on the list, Moss returned two of his three interceptions for touchdowns -- both in the same game.

Utility

Tallen Harris, Brook Hill, junior: The Guard's leading tackler (83.5) had to make the list. Harris was the anchor in the middle of Brook Hill's tenacious defense, also recording 2.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recovers and one forced fumble.

Punter

Jordan VanderVorste, T.K. Gorman, senior: The Crusader punter was first-team all-district punter and honorable mention all-state. VanderVorste was also named to the TAPPS All-State Academic Team.
