WINONA -- A recreational vehicle was destroyed Thursday after it caught fire in the 18000 block of County Road 356 near Winona.

Tyler resident Toby Jackson said he was traveling to his father's home in Mineola about 3:30 p.m. when the fire broke out.

"I was taking it back to park it at his place ... It started sputtering, and I opened the hood, saw flames, shut it and called 911," he said.

There were two fire extinguishers in the RV, Jackson said, but he was unable to get to them before responders arrived.

Thomas McClung, a firefighter with the Winona Volunteer Fire Department, said the fire was fully evolved and the RV had burned to the ground when he got to the scene. The fire was controlled after about 18 minutes.

As he stood near the blackened RV, McClung estimated the damage to be about $15,000.

Jackson said he was unable to save his possessions, including a television and fishing tackle.

He used the RV for recreational activities, such as camping, and plans to purchase another vehicle, he said.

No injuries were reported.
