Emory Hunter Moves Into Second
Patience paid off this season for Heath Sisk.

He saw a 15-point buck on his property in Rains County several times during the October archery season, but was never able to get a shot. On the second day of the regular season the buck showed up again and the Emory hunter took the buck scoring 158 and has moved into second in the North Texas Adult Division of the Tyler Paper's 30th annual Big Buck Contest.

"My son and I were hunting and hoping to see him. After daybreak he finally came out chasing a doe. He was obviously in rut," said Sisk.

He dropped the buck at 244 yards using a Weatherby 257.

An unusual non-typical, scoring required a certified Boone and Crockett scorer to be called in to help identify points and where they began. The deer was scored as a typical 10 with five non-typical points.

It had a largest main beam length of 20 4/8 and an inside spread of 20 4/8. The longest tine measured 7 5/8 inches and the largest circumference at the base was 4 1/8 inches.

J.M. Hamilton of Overton continues to lead the North Texas Adult Division with a 13-point Freestone County buck scoring 163 1/8

Jacob Newman, Rusk, drops to second in the North Texas Adult Division of the contest with a 10-point Cherokee County buck scoring 144 gross taken in October with a Managed Lands Deer permit.

Austin Averitt of Lindale became the first leader in the North Texas Youth Division with a 12-point Sterling County buck scoring 143.

Bryson Fleming, 10, White Oak leads the South Texas Youth Division with an 8-point Webb County buck that scored 117 1/8. Fleming took his deer during the youth-only weekend.

There have yet to be any entries in the South Texas Adult Division or the statewide Women's Division.

Registration continues for the contest. Hunters must register at least 24 hours before taking their deer and may register at any of the sponsors including: Army/Navy Store of Tyler, 1201 E.SE. Loop 323; East Texas Seed, Cotton Belt Rail Yard; Gander Mountain, 151 Market Square; Lynch's Food Store, 3400 E. Fifth; Mac's Gun Shop, 213 E. Elm; Noonday Gun Trader, 14674 U.S. 155 South; Porter's Sporting Goods, located on U.S. 155 South in Dogwood City and Still-Life Taxidermy, 1415 E. Tyler St., Athens.

This year the Big Buck contest will not accept deer taken from behind a high fence in adult or youth divisions. Other contest rules are listed on the back of the registration tickets.

First-place winners in each adult category will receive a Remington .270-caliber rifle and a mount of their deer. Second-place winners will receive $300 in gift certificates.

The North and South Texas youth divisions are for hunters 16 and under. The winners of both will receive a mount of their deer. Second- and third-place finishers will receive gift certificates.
