Orr Elementary To Get USS New York Flag
Orr Elementary will receive a special U.S. Flag to be flown next school year in front of the new school. The Crew of the USS New York raised the flag Nov. 2, and flew it for 24 hours.
Sgt. Danielle Bacon, the daughter of Jeff Palmer, an Orr Elementary fourth-grade science teacher, serves on the USS New York.
"We are thrilled with the opportunity to fly such a special flag," Orr Elementary Principal Walter Perez said.
The USS New York arrived in New York harbor on Nov. 2. She officially became a ship of the U.S. Navy at a commissioning ceremony on Nov. 7.
The ship was built with steel from the World Trade Center's twin towers destroyed during the 9/11 attacks in New York City. The ship's bow stem includes 7 1/2 tons of steel recovered from the Twin Towers. The Ship's motto is 'Strength forged through sacrifice. Never forget.'
