TJC Newspaper Receives, State, National Recognition
The Apache Pow Wow, the student newspaper of Tyler Junior College, received awards at a recent joint conference of Texas Community College Journalism Association and Associated College Press in Austin.
"I am proud of my students who showed that TJC is preparing them with the tools to succeed in a changing news business," said Laura Krantz, journalism department chairwoman and newspaper faculty adviser. "These students are the future of journalism, and it was exciting to see them use their talents to compete with schools from across the nation."
Staff members received the following awards from TCCJA: first, news photo, Shela Burgess (Tyler); first, editorial writing, Matt Loving (Lindale); second, cartooning, Kamren Thompson (Lindale); second, advertising single ad, Cody Lillich (Lindale); third, feature writing, Sarah Goulden (Tyler); third, in-depth/investigative reporting; Sarah Goulden (Tyler); third, sports feature, Griffin Blackburn (Tyler); and honorable mention, column writing, Kamren Thompson (Lindale).
In TCCJA's on-site contest, Sarah Hall of Tyler placed third in editorial writing and Courtney Hodgkins of Kilgore placed third for news photo.
The Apache Pow Wow was a finalist for ACP's Pacemaker award, the highest honor a student publication can receive.
In ACP's Best of Show competition, the newspaper entered its Oct. 16, 2009, edition and placed third among two-year, non-weekly broadsheet newspapers at the convention.
