WICHITA FALLS -- John Tyler fired on almost all cylinders, and kept its unbeaten season in four-wheel drive.
Jeremy Johnson and David Bush drove the offense to the tune of 500 yards, and JT moved to 4-0 with a convincing 53-13 victory over Wichita Falls Rider Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
JT needed all of 13 minutes to take a commanding 27-0 lead, with Johnson scoring on two runs (7, 11) and throwing a 57-yard TD strike to Ricky Collins before David Bush scored his first of two runs.
The JT defense dominated the first 24 minutes, holding Rider to minus-3 yards and zero first downs. Rider scored both its touchdowns on defense and finished with 16 yards of total offense -- minus-8 rushing -- and just two first downs, one on a penalty.
The Lions saddled the Raiders with four sacks -- one each from Keland Gipson, Desmond Dean, Alvin Arps and Darrien Jones. Meanwhile, Ashton Dorsey, a senior tackle committed to Texas, forced a fumble, pressured the passer three times and recorded one of JT's 11 tackles for losses.
Jarod Haggerty and Antjuan Lee both recovered fumbles and Darrien Starling intercepted a pass.
"The defense basically pitched a shutout," said JT coach Dereck Rush, whose team allowed an average of more than 326 yards its first three games. "They've been getting better. We've been harping on being able to stop the run. They got tired of us telling them that and stepped up to the plate."
Johnson accounted for five TDs, including an exciting 45-yarder in the third quarter to atone for two earlier turnovers -- one an interception returned 40 yards for a TD, and another a fumble scooped up for a 28-yard score. The JT senior scampered his way to 122 yards rushing and three TDs, and completed 12 of 19 passes for 195 yards and two scores.
Ricky Collins caught both TDs, a 57-yarder in the first quarter after getting behind the defense, and a 9-yarder in the fourth quarter on a fade route with him matched up one-on-one with the cornerback.
Kedrick Chancellor carried 13 times for 78 yards and Bush turned 10 touches into 68 yards of offense and a pair of 8-yard TD runs. Also, Ky'Ordric Black tacked on 85 yards of offense, including a team-high four receptions for 55 yards.
The Lions looked impressive in beating the winless Raiders (0-3), who dropped their first two games to the No. 1 team in Class 5A Cedar Hill (28-0) and the defending Class 4A Division II state champion Cedar Hill (26-15).
"Up to this point we played well," Rider coach Scott Ponder said. "Tonight they just really took it to us."
JT played almost a perfect first half, except for penalties and two rare turnovers -- the first of the season.
The first four scoring drives spanned 12 plays. The fifth even featured a TD -- Johnson's 51-yard TD strike to Demetree Curtis -- which came back due to a holding call.
An interception later ended the drive deep in Rider territory, and Mark Strange jumped Johnson's screen pass later in the half for Rider's lone points.
"They came out in the first half focused," added Rush. "And we came out in the second half (after the turnovers) and redeemed ourselves."
