Raiders Fall To Lobos, 31-7

Robert E. Lee doubled its offensive yardage output from a week ago, committed fewer penalties and had less turnovers.

But the Red Raiders couldn't slow down Longview, which won 31-7 Saturday in the finale of the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic at TMF Rose Stadium.

Lee (0-2) finished with 229 yards, but had a field-goal try go awry in the first half, and although they were able to drive the football against Longview, the drives ultimately came to nothing.

Meanwhile, Longview (2-0), ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, scored 10 points in the first half and 21 through the third and fourth quarters to lead 31-0. The Red Raiders avoided the shutout by scoring a touchdown late on a 15-yard scoring strike from senior quarterback T.J. Scholler to tight end Zach Hightower.

"We are still making a lot of mistakes and we've got to get that corrected," said Lee head coach Mike Owens.

"And they are a great football team and we're not very good yet, but I think if we keep working we are going to be okay. But we have to keep after it."

Longview senior Da'Cedric Hunt had two short touchdown runs to go along with a highlight-reel 34-yard scoring scamper by Carey Fortson on a reverse and a bruising 15-yard touchdown catch and run from Keylon Shaw.

All told, Longview racked up 238 yards rushing and 188 passing.

"We were able to hit some big plays and we got ourselves in some long yardage situations with penalties and we were fortunate enough to overcome those," said Longview head coach John King. "(Lee) had some chances they weren't able to capitalize on and I'm sure they will get that corrected."

The Lobos grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 31-yard field goal from Kyle Jenkins.

The Red Raiders were sparked by a 30-yard catch and run from Chris Dinkins that helped get Lee's offense going.

The drive eventually bogged down at the Lobos 14, setting up a 31-yard field goal try for Lee. But REL's holder lost the ball and when trying to scramble was thrown for a 13-yard loss.

Longview took advantage of the mishap to drive 73 yards the other way in 12 plays, capped by a 2-yard run from Hunt.

Lee tried to get some points before halftime, driving into Lobo territory but a holding penalty and incompletion ended the drive to leave the score 10-0 at the break.

The second half started the way the first half ended as Lee drove into Longview territory, but on third-and-8 from the Lobo 37, quarterback Luke Wagner was brought down on a coverage sack. This forced punter Brady Jones, who average 41.5 yards on four kicks, to try and pin the Lobos back down near its own end zone.

Longview showed its resolve by driving 92 yards, highlighted by a 38-yard pass play from Aaron Johnson to Fortson and 34-yard run by Tyler McCray.

The end result was another two-yard scoring plunge by Hunt.

Fortson officially put it out of reach when he outraced and overpowered Lee defenders for a 34-yard touchdown run on a reverse.

The Red Raiders next face Dallas Kimball at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Dallas.
