LINDALE -- In just over a quarter and a half of football, Lindale lost its starting quarterback, starting running back -- and ultimately, the game as Wills Point ran away with a 34-14 victory Friday at Eagle Stadium.
Senior quarterback Matt Broussard was knocked out on the Eagles' first possession when he was hit on a completed pass. Senior Keandre Ross had to leave the game early in the second quarter and junior Terronce Johnson, who was the second tailback on the depth chart, was shaken up and had to leave just after halftime.
Head coach Mike Meador said his team never recovered from Broussard being on the sideline.
"I really think when that happened, our kids just turned it down," Meador said. "They were hurt because they knew he was hurt. From there, they didn't know what to do. And then we lose our running back and we were struggling."
The opposite was true of Wills Point (2-0), which moved the ball seemingly effortlessly against the Eagles to lead 25-0 at halftime and 34-0 at the end of the third quarter.
Tigers running back Brandon Morris did it all, carrying 15 times for 171 yards and four touchdowns (39, 29, 34, 20). He also caught a 34-yard scoring strike from quarterback Trent Jurica, who finished 10-of-19 for 181 yards.
Lindale (0-2) was held to 50 yards of offense in the first half, but eventually got things rolling late in the fourth quarter. Junior receiver John Ryzman was the reason as he moved under center and carried 12 times for 138 yards, highlighted by a 67-yard scoring run. He also hooked up with senior Zach McCoy on a 29-yard touchdown pass for the game's final score.
Meador said Broussard is a question mark for Lindale's next game, but Ryzman proved that he might be able to step in and lead the way.
"We may have found something (with Ryzman)," Meador said. "We lose a great athlete (in Broussard) We've got to dig deep and figure out something."
