Top-Ranked Gilmer Opens Weekend With Rout
By SHANE STARK
Staff Writer

Gilmer head coach Jeff Traylor, who returned home to revive the Buckeyes program nine years ago, moved within one victory of career win No. 100 on Thursday night.

And the Buckeyes got him there in familiar fashion, scoring 48 points in the opening half to defeat Rains, 76-12, in the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic opener at TMF Rose Stadium.

Traylor, a 1986 GHS graduate, returned to his native town in 2000, leading the Buckeyes to a 6-4 finish that season. Gilmer joined the Class 3A elite three seasons later, finishing 13-1 and reaching the state quarterfinals.

Perfection came only four years into his tenure, when the Buckeyes went 16-0 and captured their first-ever state title.

Championship No. 2 is something that could come in year No. 9. No doubt, the Class 3A top-ranked Buckeyes have given no reason to believe otherwise.

A week after beating Jasper -- which Gilmer downed for the state title -- by 28 points, the Buckeyes seized control quickly. By the time the bands came out to perform for the 3,000 or so in attendance, Gilmer led 48-0.

The same occurred last season, when Gilmer beat Rains, 77-21.

Buckeyes senior quarterback Darian Godfrey, a state player of the year candidate, finished 13-of-16 for 291 yards and four touchdowns.

The Buckeyes scored six different ways Thursday night.

In addition to the four touchdown passes, Gilmer rushed for three scores -- two from Vance Green (21 and 33 yards).

Gilmer also reached the end zone on both kickoff and punt returns, as well as a fumble and interception return.

Tristan Holt had both special teams touchdowns -- a 69-yard punt return and kickoff return from 90 yards.

Traylor will go for No. 100 next week against Liberty-Eylau.
