Grace Rallies To Win

Following a Eustace turnover on downs, Grace was in danger of doing the same trailing by two with less than three minutes to play. But Grant Ingram threw to Craig Schambach, who slipped the last defender and ran in for a touchdown and the lead as the Cougars topped Eustace, 33-27, Saturday night in the finale of the Tyler Football Classic at Mewbourne Field.
Grace (1-0) found itself chasing Eustace (0-1) for most of the second half, until it stuffed running back Trevan Johnson short on a fourth down attempt with 5:27 to play.
Four plays later, Schambach found his way to the end zone on a 43-yard completion, and the Cougars took their first lead of the game since an early 7-6 advantage in the first quarter. Grant Childress ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 33-27 with 3:20 to play.
With just under two minutes to play, Johnson's pass attempt to quarterback Chris Compton flew too far, allowing Grace to take over and run out the clock.
Ingram and Grace quarterback Taylor Stanley each completed six passes, two for touchdowns. Ingram threw for 131 yards and Stanley recorded 133 yards and an interception.
Bradley White (three catches for 88 yards) and Childress (two catches for 81 yards) each caught touchdowns for the Cougars.
While Grace did it mostly through the air, Eustace dominated on the ground. Led by Johnson's 92 yards (55 on a touchdown run in the third quarter), the Bulldogs totaled 309 rushing yards on 49 attempts.
The Cougars pulled to within 27-25 at the 8:03 mark in the fourth quarter when Stanley took a brutal hit as he released a pass that found White open at the Bulldog 35. White cut back and dashed for the remaining yardage and a touchdown. However, the Cougars' failed to pull even as the pass attempt fell incomplete.
Trailing 14-7 at the half, Grace quickly took advantage of a Eustace fumble early in the second half. After taking over at the Bulldog 43, Stanley connected with Childress on a 40-yard touchdown pass.
Childress caught the ball at the 13, ducked under a defender and sprinted home. A botched snap ruined the attempted kick as Eustace maintained a one-point lead.
But the Bulldogs immediately responded. Trevan Johnson rushed up the middle, twisted outside and sprinted for a 55-yard touchdown and a 21-13 lead.
Grace came back with an eight-play, 79-yard drive to pull within 21-19 with 5:47 left in the third. Ingram capped the drive with a 1-yard keeper.
Eustace then drove 68 yards in 16 plays, the last Compton's second 1-yard touchdown. A failed run attempt left the Cougars down eight.
