GLADEWATER -- Gladewater started the 2008 season in shutout fashion, beating Center 18-0.
On Thursday night, the Roughriders returned the favor with a 7-0 victory against the Bears in the Gladewater Classic at Jack V. Murphy-Bear Stadium.
The season opener for both teams was sloppy from the beginning, marred by 11 fumbles (five lost) and a pair of interceptions. Mistakes stalled scoring opportunities for both teams, plus the Bears turned the ball over on downs another three times inside Roughriders territory.
Center quarterback De'Andre Simmons completed nine of 19 passes for 97 yards and the only touchdown, a 22-yard pass to Ty Hubbard in the opening quarter. Roughriders running back Tre Sudds finished with 87 yards rushing.
Gladewater quarterback Zaveon Miller ran for 105 yards, but fumbled twice in the fourth quarter and threw a pair of interceptions.
The game's only score was set up when Roughriders defender Sekendrick Calhoun recovered a fumble at the Bears 36.
Gladewater never got inside Center's red zone during the half, plus fumbled the ball four times - losing one - and threw an interception.
