Big Sandy Stops Crusaders, 26-12

Forcing three early turnovers and finding success with multiple running options, Big Sandy opened the season with a 26-12 victory over T.K. Gorman at Mewbourne Field on Thursday night in the Tyler Football Classic opener.

Forcing three early turnovers and finding success with multiple running options, Big Sandy opened the season with a 26-12 victory over T.K. Gorman at Mewbourne Field on Thursday night in the Tyler Football Classic opener.
Wildcat quarterback Jose Garcia rushed for two touchdowns and threw for one more as Big Sandy (1-0) built a 19-0 halftime lead. The lead was upped to 26-0 before the Crusaders (0-1) rallied for 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Big Sandy drove for nearly six minutes to open the game with six points, aided by a fake punt in which Garcia threw to Tim Sunday for a 17-yard gain. Garcia tumbled into the end zone from four yards out to give the Wildcats the early 6-0 advantage 6:34 into the game.
Gorman quarterback Alex Fergerson fumbled the ball on the Crusaders' first possession and then threw interceptions on the next two, putting the team in an early hole. The second interception was returned 24 yards by Waylon Baird to the 10, setting up a Garcia's second score.
Big Sandy ended the first half with a lob touchdown pass from Garcia to Sunday with 40 seconds remaining on a fourth down.
The Wildcats rushed for 213 yards on 47 carries, including five players with at least 28 yards. Baird led the way with 67 yards.
With 7:53 to play in the game, Fergerson capped a 12-play, 54-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown scamper for the Crusaders' first score.
After forcing a three-and-out, Gorman again cut into the lead on an 82-yard touchdown pass from Fergerson to Ricky Hand, who hauled in the pass at the Crusader 45, broke away from a defender and sprinted the remainder of the field. Fergerson finished with 190 yards on 13-of-19 passing.
D.J. Nelson, a 6-foot, 280-pound running back, ran over defenders for 33 yards on seven carries, the final one a 2-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.
