Tough Non-District Schedule Should Have Wildcats Ready
By TRAVIS YOESTING
Staff Writer

The Whitehouse Wildcats begin practice today with one thing in mind: winning every game.

"We've talked as a staff and all and we'd like to win all our games," said Whitehouse coach Randy McFarlin. "We're shooting for a 10-0 mark."

Easier said than done.

Not only do the Wildcats have to replace the most prolific quarterback in school history, they play a fearsome non-district schedule that features a defending champ, a state runner-up and a tough 5A school.

But first thing's first, McFarlin said: getting in shape with two-a-days and picking up where the squad left off from spring ball.

"We've got to have a good carry-over from spring ball," McFarlin said. "Hopefully they come back in good shape."

Junior Preston Conder will take over at the QB spot for Brady Attaway. Now at Stephen F. Austin, Attaway finished his career with more than 8,000 yards passing and 80 TDs.

Conder's transition from JV to varsity will no doubt be made easier by stud wide out Trey Metoyer, who reeled in 72 catches for 1,105 yards and 14 scores last year as a sophomore.

However, Whitehouse's schedule is not for the faint of heart.

The Wildcats open at Class 5A Garland Naaman Forest, which went 8-3 last year. Whitehouse then travels north to play the Class 4A-Division II defending state champion Sulphur Springs. After a home date with Corsicana and a road game against Red Oak, the Wildcats travel to face Class 3A-Division II runner-up Celina.

"A tough schedule is good for us, it prepares you for a tough district race," McFarlin said. "The people we play, I don't think we'll see anybody any better in district play."

Whitehouse went 7-4 (3-2) last year and will open District 14-4A at home against Jacksonville. The Wildcats travel to Lindale and get Kilgore and Nacogdoches at home before finishing at Henderson.

"We're very positive and we're excited to start," McFarlin said. "Our kids are ready, we've got a great group of kids this year and we're just excited for Monday morning to finally arrive."
