East Texas Hosts National Go-Kart Racing Event
WINONA -- More than 500 racers are converging on the East Texas area this week for the 2009 International Kart Federation 4-Cycle Speedway Grand Nationals.
I-20 Speedway will host the weeklong event with practice on Monday and racing Tuesday through Friday.
International Kart Federation is the oldest karting organization in the United States and will for the first time bring regional karting champions to East Texas for a Grand National event, Carrie L. Snyder of I-20 Speedway said.
Snyder said there will be action each day with new champions crowned each day as well. Also, a Duffy will be awarded to the winner of each race.
Some of the karters expected to compete are Ron Powell of Thomasville, Ga.; Dane Williams of Hickory, S.C.; C.J. Hulsey of El Paso; Zack Humphrey of Aberdeen, S.D.; Kyle Towns of Dubberly, La.; and local champion, Greg Snyder of Flint.
Cindy Smoak, assistant vice president of SporTyler, said the Tyler and Lindale officials are working together to offer hospitality for the event.
On Monday, gates open at 8 a.m. for practice.
The opening ceremonies are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Feature races are set for 7 p.m. each day.

From the West, take Exit 571A to right onto Highway 271. Then travel one mile and turn right on Country Road 353. The track entrance is on the right about žth of a mile on the right side of road.
From the East, take Exit 571A to left onto Highway 271. Then travel one mile and turn right on CR 353. The first road on the right is CR 358. The track entrance is on the right about žth of a mile on the right side of road.
