Despite lacking even a varsity letter to his credit, John Tyler wideout Ricky Collins received the letter that counted.
A junior varsity standout last year at quarterback, Collins cemented his future early by issuing an oral commitment to Southern Methodist recently.
The non-binding oral commitment marked JT's third, and second to SMU. Back in the spring, JT quarterback Jeremy Johnson pledged his services to SMU, where he also expects to play receiver.
JT blue-chip defensive tackle Ashton Dorsey, a preseason all-state selection, started the commitment frenzy by giving his word to the University of Texas.
Collins (6-0, 175, 4.5-second 40-yard dash) created a buzz during the JT Blue-White Spring game when he caught a 77-yard touchdown pass from Johnson. He later made a mark on the camp circuit.
JT coach Dereck Rush credited Collins' ascent to his willingness to gain experience on JV as a junior, and for his offseason dedication.
"A lot of kids want to play varsity. He saw opportunity to get more reps and benefited," said Rush while describing Collins as a player who wanted to get better. "He brings explosion and he's developed into a good route runner."
A plethora of Lions continue to be coveted by four-year schools, including wide receiver/defensive back Tarik Spencer, offensive lineman Gerron Anthony, running backs Ky'Ordric Black and Kedrick Chancellor, and linebackers Alvin Arps, Joe Bayonne and Cliff Caldwell.
"Our main thing is staying focused on having a successful season," Rush said. "(By them doing that) they'll get looks."
