Celebrate The Fourth With Music, Fireworks
Staff Reports

Popular fireworks shows filling the night sky with color, concerts of patriotic music and parades -- on land and water -- are among the ways East Texans will celebrate the Independence Day holiday.

People will have plenty of choices this year when it comes to celebrating the founding of our nation.

The city of Tyler prohibits individuals from possessing, selling or using fireworks. Exceptions to the ordinance are professional fireworks displays and those require a permit from the fire department, Deputy City Attorney Steve Kean said.

Tyler Jaycees Fireworks
The Tyler Jaycees will hold its annual Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza at Lindsey Park, 1255 Spur 364.

Gates to the park will open at 4 p.m. Saturday. The fireworks show, traditionally the largest in the region, will begin at dark.

Admission to the park is $10 a carload. No alcohol or personal fireworks are allowed.

Begun in 1963 at Rose Stadium, the fireworks show was held at Rose Stadium before moving to Lindsey Park in 1994. "Lindsey Park provides a family atmosphere with picnic areas, children's activities, live music and a dunking booth," said information from the Jaycees.

Tyler police will help traffic flow in and out of Lindsey Park. Beginning at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Spur 364 at Loop 323 will close to eastbound traffic and the right lane of the southbound traffic on Loop 323 near Spur 364 will close, said Don Martin, police information officer.

Residents who live off Spur 364 between Loop 323 and Greenbriar Road will be allowed through when they show their driver's license to officers, he said.

At the end of the fireworks show, the two left turn lanes eastbound on Texas Highway 31 at Loop 323 will be closed. Traffic will not be allowed to turn left, north, onto Loop 323 from the eastbound lanes of Texas 31.
