Maxey Tops Cascades Tourney

On one of the more sweltering East Texas summer days yet, Rick Maxey made everyone else sweat Saturday at The Cascades Golf Club men's championship.

With temperatures approaching triple digits, Maxey moved into a comfortable lead with an even score of 71 in the second round. His two-day total stands at 1-over 143.

Maxey, a former state champion at Pine Tree High School and All-American at Stephen F. Austin, leads Randy Huffstickler by five strokes entering the final day of action today.

Huffstickler, an assistant football coach at Robert E. Lee, trailed Maxey by just one shot through the first 18 holes on Friday before dropping two shots off his first-day pace with a 4-over 75.

In the meantime Maxey finished strong on the back nine. Following bogeys on the No. 11 and 12 holes, Maxey rolled in birdies on Nos. 13 and 15. On the 15th hole, he chipped in from the edge of the green to reach even-par for the day. He remained there upon cooling off in the clubhouse momentarily prior to stepping back outside in the 99-degree heat to scan the leaderboard.

"I hit the ball better and hit the greens real good," said the 59-year-old Maxey, who paired with Huffstickler and Jay Misenheimer for the second round. "You're going to have to hit it to play with the young pros in the Texas State Open."

At last year's TSO event at The Cascades, Maxey missed the cut. He hopes to use the men's club championship as a springboard to bigger and better things at the annual event, set for July 16-19.

"With the Texas State Open coming up in two weeks, this is an excellent tune-up," said Maxey, who recorded four birdies, including one on the front nine, and the same amount of bogeys on the steaming afternoon. "The greens are getting fast like the Texas State Open demands. (Even having a solid lead) you want to play the golf course and try to shoot the lowest you can."

Ari Bollinger shot 76 for the second straight day to take over the third spot. Misenheimer, who fired a 74 on Friday, slipped into a tie for fourth at 153 with Doug Cole, who carded a 73 on Saturday.

The tournament begins play at noon today. The final group goes off at 2:20 p.m.
