Tax Exemption For Some Disabled Veterans
House Bill 3613, recently signed into law, gives a property tax exemption for disabled veterans with a 100 percent disability.

Eligible disabled veterans must complete an application and submit it to the Smith County Appraisal District.

"A letter informing disabled veterans currently qualified with a 70 percent or more disability rating will be mailed soon," said Smith County Appraisal District Chief Appraiser Michael Barnett.

This new exemption will apply only to the residence homestead of qualified veterans.

A current veterans rating letter is requested. This letter may be obtained by contacting the Veterans Administration at 1-800-827-1000.

Barnett encourages qualified disabled veterans to make inquiries at their earliest convenience so the appraisal roll, scheduled to be certified in July, will correctly reflect their status. Questions regarding the new legislation should be directed to 903-510-8614.
