AAUW Scholarship Recipients Chosen
AAUW announced its selection of scholarship recipients for the 2009-10 school year. They were evaluated based on their academic record, community and school involvement, commitment to further education, and financial need.
Jon'Kayla Brown is a senior at Chapel Hill High School. She is the expected valedictorian of her graduating class. She is the Senior Class President, Drum Major of the band, a member of the Debate Team, the National Honor Society and the Student Senate. Jon'Kayla volunteers at Mother Frances Hospital, the G.A.P. Program (mentoring program for junior high girls), Shoes for Kids and is a Sunday School teacher. She plans to attend Baylor University and study pediatric medicine.
Mika Smith will attend Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, majoring in Psychology and Chemistry. She is a senior at Robert E. Lee High School and is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, and is a National Merit Scholarship Recipient. She is active in her church Softball League, Bible Club, church Mission trips, Meals on Wheels, and Habitat for Humanity. Mika is the salutatorian of her graduating class.
Tiffany Wiley plans on attending the University of Texas at Tyler after graduating from TJC in May, working toward her goal of becoming a psychologist. Tiffany has returned to school after six years in the workforce. She is active in Friends of the Hudnall Planetarium, volunteers at the Tyler Public Library and the Salvation Army Family Store. She has been named to the President's List for maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
Proven Scholar Scholarship:
Sara Scarborough is the recipient of the Proven Scholar Scholarship. She plans to attend Texas State University and major in communications after graduating from TJC with a major in business administration. Sara is actively involved with Phi Theta Kappa, chapter Alpha Omicon as vice president of service and plays on the Lady Apache Volleyball team. Sara's volunteering activities include Habitat for Humanity, PATH, Keep Tyler Beautiful, Tyler Junior College Foundation, and Karing Kitchen. Being a student assistant in the Office of Advancement and External Affairs allows Sara to work 18 hours a week and still maintain a 3.53 GPA.

Kara Frazier, a single working mother, is awarded the Virginia Skeen Clark Scholarship. Kara works full time while attending TJC, majoring in Paralegal Studies, which she plans to pursue for a degree.
She has worked with her employer helping with Tyler's Brick Street Committee and is involved with her son's sports activities. Kara manages to maintain a 4.0 GPA.
Hali Cleveland, a four year member of AAUW, receives the AAUW Dorothy Scott Scholarship. Hali will purchase study materials to prepare for the state examination which will certify her to be a Certified Public Accountant.
She earned a bachelor's degree from UT Tyler and holds membership in the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Hali works full time, is very active in her church, and has served AAUW as Assistant Treasurer, Treasurer and Webmaster.
