April 19: Socialism Won't Work
REMEMBERING: I am 85 years old and lived through the Great Depression, four wars and raised my family. I have always had a job, paid my bills and my taxes. At times it was very difficult, but my family and I made the choice to live in a house that we could make monthly payments. We drove a car we could afford; not living beyond our means. We put our son through college. We did all of this without government help.
No one was turned away from our home who was hungry as mother fed them all.
My dad, who was a Chevrolet dealer, went broke in 1930. The government did not bail him out; he loaded his shop equipment and parts department on a truck and moved to Jacksonville and started a parts store with a repair department. When he made enough money he moved his family here to Jacksonville. We had not become a Socialist country and he knew he had to get off his butt and get it done himself.
When I wake up now and hear the news, I wonder where I am. We have lived in difficult times before and we, not the government got us through them. Our great leaders have spent more "paper" than we will be able to cover in the next 50 years and they are not through yet. The Congress and president are equally responsible. Dem-ocrats, Republicans or bureaucrats are not going to get us out of this mess. We must take charge and do it ourselves. We are going to have to do what is best for our country, not what is best to get some crooked politician re-elected. We must stop this drunken spending.
I served in World War II to save our democracy, not create another socialist government. No socialist government has ever worked. What we are doing now has been tried before. It did not work then and I do not believe it will work now.
