Work is almost done on the titanic Pilot Travel Center under construction at the intersection of Interstate 20 and Farm-to-Market 14 just northeast of Tyler.

Hiring for 75 positions for the Pilot and accompanying McDonald's restaurant will begin in two weeks, with a May 11 target opening date, said Lauren Christ, a Pilot spokeswoman based in Knoxville, Tenn.

Christ said a general manager has been hired, with an announcement on that coming soon.

No grand-opening festivities have been scheduled, but there could be some special offers, she added.

The 11,000-square-foot center is being built on 19.8 acres at Interstate 20 and Farm-to-Market 14 in Tyler. It will feature six gas islands for motorists using regular to premium gas and eight islands for the diesel users.

All Pilots are open 24 hours a day and have a restaurant, with the Tyler center having a McDonald's.

The centers also have showers, ATMs, game rooms, public pay phones and CAT scales among other services.

Pilot centers sell beer and wine. However, the Tyler center is located in Precinct 3. The nearby Precinct 4 is the center of an alcohol-sales proposal that will be up for election May 9.

Pilot Travels Centers, based in Knoxville, Tenn., caters to everyday motorists and truckers in 41 states, with more than 300 retail properties, according to a recent Pilot news release stated.

There are 18 travel centers in Texas, all of them located along interstates.

They are located in Amarillo, Anthony, Baytown, Caddo Mills, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston (two), Huntsville, Laredo, Midland, New Braunfels, Orange, Robinson, San Antonio, Sulphur Springs, Van Horn and Weatherford.

Pilot Travel Centers is the nation's largest retail operator of travel centers, according to the company's web site, http://www.pilottravelcenters.com/

Pilot Travel Centers has 13,000 employees nationwide.
