QUITMAN -- The Quitman Police Department has new leadership, following former police Chief Bill Wansley's transition to Wood County sheriff.
Kelly Cole was sworn in by Quitman City Administrator Mike Hall as the new chief Dec. 15, allowing him time to ease into the office before Wansley assumed his new role, he said.
Quitman City Council members selected Cole from 27 applicants.
Cole has worked in law enforcement for 25 years, including five years as a captain in the Wood County Sheriff's Department Criminal Investigations Division.
As he begins his new task, Cole said he wants to strengthen the force and improve community relations.
"I look forward to getting folks here a good police department they can be proud of," Cole said. "I want to bring about community-type policing."
Cole said he is proud to be able to serve the residents of Quitman.
"This gives me a chance to give back to the community," he said.
"I appreciate this opportunity that the city council has given me."
Cole lives in Quitman with his wife Toni. They have three children and two grandchildren.
