Area Runners Head To State Cross Country

Throughout the fall, athletes across the state have been running toward one town -- Round Rock.

Throughout the fall, athletes across the state have been running toward one town -- Round Rock.
On Saturday, those who reached it will converge for the UIL Cross Country Championships at Old Settlers Park. The meet is scheduled to begin with the Class 1A girls race at 10 a.m. and conclude with 5A boys at 1:40 p.m.
Once again, East Texas will be well represented in most classifications. Several schools will have their entire team competing, while others will send individuals.
In Class 2A boys, Winona is in the championships for the second consecutive year. The Wildcats, who placed 12th as a team last season, finished third at the Region III meet last weekend.
Leading the effort were the brothers Jones, who finished the race with the top team times. Justin Jones clocked in second overall in a time of 17 minutes, 23 seconds, while Jared Jones placed 12th in 17:57.
Other team members are Edgar Saenz (15th, 18:15), Nathan McClellan (21st, 18:39), Marcordric Collins (79th, 20:38) and Dalton Shiflett (95th, 21:31).
Other area schools with entire teams competing are Elkhart (2A girls), Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill (2A girls), Lufkin Hudson (2A girls and boys).
The Elkhart team consists of Amber Boyd, Elise Davis, Lyric Duncan, Amanda Ham, Rebecca Jensen and Kelly Wilson.
The Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill team is made of Courtney Gaddis, Megan Merrill, Sandra Netro, Leah Schumacher, Katlyn Smith and Hannah Stevens.
The Lufkin Hudson girls team is Missy Hebert, Samantha Hernandez, Jeannette Mireles, Erin Moore, Lauren Moore, Ashley Spivey and Emily Spivey.
The Hudson boys team is Jon Bates, Bobby Bowman, Kyle Hawley, Jose Leos, Matt Mize, Eddy Rojo and Carter Willmon.
