Scholastic Achievement

Collegiate Honors
  • Wayland Lee Smith, of Lindale, was named to the Texas State Technical College President's Honor Roll for his 4.0 GPA for the summer semester.

  • Also named to the honor roll were John Tidemende Kubsch, Robert Paul McElmurry and Ricky Scott Shields, all of Tyler.

  • The 2008-09 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges includes the names of 150 students from Texas A&M University-Kingsville who were selected as outstanding campus leaders. The students and their families were honored at a program held Nov. 9 in Jones Auditorium.

  • Ashley Green, of Troup, a range and wildlife management major, joined an elite group selected from more than 2,300 colleges and universities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign countries for the honor.

  • Lindsey R. Turman, daughter of Debbye and David Carney of Whitehouse, and a student at T.K. Gorman High School in Tyler, was named the 2008 recipient of the Saint Michael's College Scholarship and Service Book Award.

  • The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism and leadership through community service.

    Miss Turman was presented the book "First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers" by Loung Ung, a 1993 St. Michael's College graduate.

  • Christina Bell, of Tyler, was awarded a scholarship grant for her leadership, academic excellence and community involvement by the Former Agents of the FBI Foundation. This Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Inc., located in Quantico, Va. Christina Bell attends Tyler Junior College in Tyler and qualifies for the scholarship competition as the granddaughter of former Special Agent George I. Kieny.

  • John Kubsch, of Tyler, graduated over the summer from Texas State Technical College from the Combination Welding Program.


  • TISD Honors
  • Allison Camille Hampton, a student at Boulter Middle School, received first place in the Top Teens writing contest for her composition "A Psalm of Life -- Willie Lee Campbell Glass."
