Trinity Valley Clinches Playoffs As Apaches Fall To Cardinals
By JOE BUIE

ATHENS -- Trinity Valley used big plays and a balanced offense to eliminate Tyler Junior College from playoff contention.

The last postseason berth went instead to the Cardinals, who piled up 552 total yards of offense in a 48-27 win over the Apaches on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Field.

Trinity Valley, 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference, broke open a tight game by outscoring the Apaches 21-7 in the third quarter.

The Cardinals' offense was dominant in the third quarter with 225 yards, including touchdown drives of 70, 75 and 84 yards to give Trinity Valley a 21-point cushion.

The Apaches (3-5, 2-4) punted on the next series, and the Cardinals let their backup quarterback and reserve tailbacks play the fourth quarter.

The triumvirate of Chad Winbush, Pat Cook and Chris Young made an impression on the Apache defense.

Cook, utilizing a short passing game, was 13-of-19 for 242 yards and three touchdowns.

Young caught seven of Cook's short passes and turned them into 173 yards and two touchdowns.

The Trinity Valley ground game took over in the second half behind DeSoto's Chad Winbush, who finished with 190 yards rushing and three scores on just 15 carries.

The Apaches matched the Cardinals with 22 first downs while rushing for 320 yards, but TJC was anemic through the air.

Quarterback Stephen Schwark (10-for-18, 60 yards) averaged just 3.3 yards per pass attempt, compared to Cook's 12.7.

With starting tailback O'Bryan Bell (12 carries, 73 yards) limited with a shoulder injury, the Apaches employed a total of nine ball carriers.

Ira Duckworth led the Apaches with 95 yards on 14 attempts, including a 43-yard touchdown that brought TJC within 34-27 with 8:09 left in the third quarter.

Turning Points

: There were no punts in a 47-point first half. The Apaches lined up to punt early in the second quarter on fourth-and-22 from the TVCC 42 and ran a fake. Chris Lenoir was stuffed for a 1-yard loss, giving the Cardinals good field position with TJC leading 14-7. Trinity Valley then went 57 yards in eight plays to tie the game at 14-14. The Cardinals retained possession on the ensuing kickoff after surprising the Apaches with a pooch kick. TVCC's Kirk Risby caught the kick in the air, setting up the Cardinals' go-ahead touchdown.
