Texas College Drops Soccer Doubleheader

One long first half plus an even longer second half amounted to a sweep for the University of Texas at Brownsville over the Texas College soccer squads Thursday at the TC Soccer Complex.

One long first half plus an even longer second half amounted to a sweep for the University of Texas at Brownsville over the Texas College soccer squads Thursday at the TC Soccer Complex.
UT-Brownsville scored four goals over the final 45 minutes to beat TC 5-1 in the men's match to remain unbeaten in Red River Athletic Conference play.
In the women's match, UT-Brownsville scored three times in the first 24 minutes on the way to a 4-0 win over TC.
The UT-Brownsville moved their record in the RRAC to 5-0 and 10-4-1 overall.
The Steers fell to 4-3 in the conference and 4-9-2 on the season in their final regular season league match, giving them the third seed for the RRAC postseason tournament.
On the women's side, UT-Brownsville improved to marks of 4-1 and 6-5-1, while TC slipped to 3-4 and 6-9-1, dropping the Lady Steers to sixth in the conference.
Men
The Scorpions scored with 9:51 left in the first half when Fernando Mendoza beat TC's Edgardo Villarreal left and kicked the ball around Daniel Ortiz, who charged in from the net.
Mendoza tacked on another goal in the 5 th minute, getting free and beating Ortiz from point-blank range.
Enrique Rivera and Filiberto Cortinas rounded out the scoring for UT-Brownsville.
Women
Stephanie Reed recorded the shutout for UT-Brownsville, which moved into a three-way tie for first with Northwood and Texas Wesleyan.
TC missed a golden opportunity to go ahead early when Reed blocked Leslie Arias' penalty kick in the sixth minute.
Eight minutes later, Verena Wonsikowski knocked in a deflected pass around a crowded goal for the first goal of the game.
Rochelle Bryan backed Wonsikowski's goal with two of her own in a short span -- on a 15-yarder in the 18th minute and 20-yarder in the 24th minute -- to give UT-Brownsville an insurmountable lead.
