John Tyler Kicker Diaz Helps Lions Take Win in OT
By SHANE STARK

It's been said many times that kickers and punt returners have highly pressurized roles, due to being the main focus of the opposing team. On Friday night, John Tyler's Jesse Diaz made the most it.

In the Lions' 17-14 overtime win against Mesquite, the kicker nailed the game-winning field goal. Though many kickers at the high school level have provided the kick in such situations, Diaz did so with odds stacked against him -- from 45 yards out.

Diaz missed a 42-yard attempt to win the game in regulation.

"The snap was good, the hold was good -- everything was good," he said. "It went right through."

Moments after Diaz's kick, Mesquite faced similar distance to tie the game. But JT's Dominic Ward blew past the Skeeters' field goal protection to block a 43-yard attempt, sending the Lions into celebration mode.

It was Ward's second blocked field goal of the night.

In addition to his field goal, Diaz was 2-for-2 on extra points. He entered the game 17-of-19 on extra points, and 4-of-5 on field goals with a long of 34 yards.
