Should Pete Rose Be In Hall Of Fame?
Nolan Ryan was in the Rose City for the Rose Festival on Friday. So it only seemed fitting that Pete Rose was discussed.

While taking questions during the Texas Rose Festival Men’s Luncheon at the Rose Garden Center, Ryan was asked if Pete Rose should be allowed in the baseball Hall of Fame.

The strikeout king responded with a definitive yes.

“I have been a supporter of Pete Rose being in the Hall of Fame and I think Pete should be recognized in the Hall of Fame for what he accomplished as a player, not as what he accomplished as a manager and not for his personal life,” Ryan said. “His personal life is just a wreck.

“Pitching against him, I know the competitor he was. I know what he accomplished in the game, I know his dedication.”

Rose ranks first in major league history in hits (4,256), singles (3,215), times on base (5,929), at bats (14,053), games played (3,562) and outs (10,328). He is second in doubles (746), sixth in runs (2,165), seventh in total bases (5,752).

He won the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 1963 and the NL MVP Award in 1973. Rose won three World Series rings — including Series MVP in 1975 — and was selected to 17 All-Star games.

Rose won two Gold Gloves as an outfielder (1969 and 1970) and the Roberto Clemente Award in 1976. The Clemente Award is given based on character and charitable contributions.

“I personally think when you walk into the Hall of Fame and you see all the records on the wall there and Pete’s in the top five in practically every record except home runs, I think he should have a plaque up there,” Ryan said.

Ryan also said that he doesn’t think Rose will ever be voted into Cooperstown.

“I really think that when Pete lied about his gambling on baseball and then when he did come out with his book and kind of ho-hummed it like it wasn’t any big deal, that he didn’t bet on Cincinnati so why is everyone in such an up roar about it, I think that that was kind of the final nail in the coffin as far as him ever getting in,” Ryan said.

As a Hall of Fame inductee himself, not to mention one of the greatest pitchers of all time, Ryan’s opinion certainly has credence.

You’ve heard what Nolan Ryan has to say, now let’s hear what the people of Tyler think about Pete Rose.
