Smith County Tax Statements Readied
By ADAM RUSSELL

Smith County taxpayers can expect their statements in the next few weeks because tax statements have been sent to the printer, according to Tax Assessor/Collector Gary Barber.

Barber said he hopes to have the statements prepared for mailing no later than Monday.

He said the department is only a day behind last year's schedule for preparing the statements because of logistical problems that arose from new state legislation.

He said House Bill 1010 cut appraisal district's jurisdiction off at county lines but did not with tax offices.

This change made gathering, processing and balancing tax information from cities and tax entities that lie within multiple counties, he said.

He said the tax office appraised for Troup, Glade-water and Van ISDs this year and meshing software created minor glitches that had to be worked out.

The tax office worked Saturday to go over sample statements, he said, to make sure everything was correct

"It's a relief to get those statements to the printer," Barber said.

"The statements are at the printers and we will start mailing them out as soon as we get them."
