Chandler Holds Pow-Wow Saturday
By KELLY GOOCH
Staff Writer

CHANDLER -- This year's Pow-Wow in Chandler will include arts and crafts vendors, live music, a parade, food and even a talent contest.

Bertha Pritchard, chamber administrator for the Chandler-Brownsboro Area Chamber of Commerce, said Wednesday that she had already rented 52 booths, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Winchester Park on Saturday.

Two women will be dressed in American Indian clothes and will dance, she said, and there will also be a booth to promote taxidermy.

Additionally, Pritchard said East Texas Medical Center and Trinity Mother Frances will be at the pow-wow, with one hospital giving flu shots and another hospital taking blood pressure and providing promotional information.

"It's a way for the hospitals to promote their hospital and to promote health," she said.

At least two booths will be raising money for a good cause.

Christmas items, including candy canes, will be sold at the booth, with the money to go toward buying items for children at various schools at Christmas time, Pritchard said.

The Chandler-Brownsboro Area Chamber of Commerce will also have a food booth with hamburgers, she said, and the proceeds from the booth will go to scholarships for students in Brownsboro ISD.

Pritchard mentioned that she heard there was a booth last year that earned more than $4,000 and items that will be sold Saturday include baskets, air fresheners and produce.

In addition to the booths, there will be plenty of entertainment Saturday afternoon at the park.

There will be a pee wee rodeo for children, inflatables, live music and a talent contest, Pritchard said.

Julie Crawford, Golden Girls Drill Team booster club treasurer, said she believes at least 10 people will participate in the talent contest.

The first prize is $100 and the second prize is $50, she said, and there is still time for someone to enter the contest.

"It just has to be a good, clean talent," Crawford said.

She noted that all of the contestants should receive a prize because there are also items such as gift certificates from restaurants and hairdressers.

The entry fee is $10 and someone can sign up at the event or get a form from the Chandler-Brownsboro Area Chamber of Commerce on Texas Highway 31 in Chandler.

Crawford said the talent contest kicks off around 11 a.m. in the park.

But before people venture to the park, they can see the parade festivities.

Tom Martin, co-chair of the parade, said the parade will start at 10 a.m. at Main Street and Farm-to-Market Road 315 and will end up in a pasture next to Winchester Park.

This year's theme has to do with honoring Brownsboro ISD teachers and administrators and he is expecting about 110 floats, Martin said.

He said those in the parade include church groups, members of the Brownsboro High School Golden Girls Drill Team, antique tractors, old cars and Brownsboro ISD Superintendent Elton Cald-well as the grand marshal.

"It was a great success last year and the crowd loved it," Caldwell said. "I'm hoping it will be as big of a success this year."
