Oct. 7: A Great Home
ROSES: It was 1985 when I first realized Tyler was going to be home; a place where I could raise a family and be involved in hometown activities.
The hometown feeling was not something that I claimed, but rather it was something Tylerites freely extended to me and to all visitors.
Within the first few days of my arrival to Tyler, I found myself welcomed and encouraged to participate in civic duties. The inclusion and appreciation has continued ever since.
I had a unique opportunity to experience those initial, heartfelt sentiments again just last month as I witnessed over and over again our Tyler citizens and city officials pour themselves out so unselfishly to the Hurricane Ike evacuees.
Tyler volunteers included people from every walk of life, from city and county officials and staff the private sector, youngsters, and retirees who rolled up their sleeves and rose to the occasion. They provided safe, secure, and clean shelters. They saw that the evacuees' healthcare, transportation, shopping and personal needs were met. Many with complicated medical issues such as dialysis and other chronic conditions were handled professionally and expediently by our first-class medical facilities.
I watched our city manager and his staff work around the clock to prepare and serve meals, and respond to individual needs.
Finally, I watched from a polite distance at the departure as countless numbers of evacuees shook hands and exchanged million-dollar hugs with Tyler volunteers thanking them for their hospitality while they were in Tyler.
I have always been proud to call Tyler home. It gave me pause to ponder how many evacuees would decide to stay here and call Tyler home. My sincere thanks are extended to everyone who rose to the occasion and represented the "Rose City" with open arms.
